The Netherlands forward scored against Morocco just days after personal tragedy.

The biggest FIFA World Cup in history produced pulsating matches, spectacular goals and record-breaking performances. Here, we reflect on the most memorable moments from the greatest show on earth.

Cody Gakpo showed immense courage simply by taking to the pitch for the Netherlands’ last-32 tie against Morocco. Just days earlier, his partner Noa shared the devastating news that their unborn son had died during pregnancy.

Speaking on the eve of the match, Dutch captain Virgil van Dijk said: “At such a moment it becomes clear again that football is a side issue, and that there are more important things in life. Being there for Cody is the most important thing.”

With the heartfelt support of his family, the Netherlands squad and wider football world, Gakpo not only played against Morocco, but scored the game’s opening goal. After crashing the ball into the back of the net, he sunk to his knees, overwhelmed with emotion as his Oranje team-mates embraced him. As he walked back to the centre circle, Gakpo pointed to the sky in tribute to his baby boy.

The Netherlands did not win the match, with Morocco eventually prevailing on penalties to progress to the Round of 16.

As Van Dijk succinctly stated, though, there are more important things in life.
