A crazed killer, who stabbed his mother over 40 times, then dressed up in her clothes to hide the murder, has been convicted of manslaughter.

Emmanuel

22 year-old Nigerian student Emmanuel Kalejaiye, killed his mother Tolu Kalejaiye at their home in Essex in September 2013, and was found guilty of manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility, rather than murder, because he had been suffering from mental health issues at the time.

On the morning of the murder, Kalejaiye attacked his mother with a kitchen knife he had bought just a month earlier. During the attack Ms Kalejaiye attempted to call her boyfriend, and left him a voicemail on which the chilling attack can be heard.

Following the attack, Kalejaiye put on a pink tracksuit which he had brought from Primark, and moved his mother’s car to make neighbours think that she had left for work. Her boyfriend arrived not too long after the attack to find Ms Kalejaiye’s body on the ground. Kalejaiye, told him his mother had been attack, and fled scene. He was later seen casually buying snacks at a nearby shop, before turning himself in.

He initially admitted to the murder in a written statement to police, where he claimed his mother had “subjected him to a life time of physical and mental abuse”.

“She used the Bible to rationalise what she did to me. I believe she manipulated and brainwashed me,” the statement said. “I have been very depressed for a long time. I have tried to overcome it but I couldn’t take it anymore.”

He later changed his statement claiming he had been forced to kill Ms Kalejaiye, who worked as an accountant for Camden Council, by a group of racist thugs, who also made him wear the women’s clothes. He then pleaded diminished responsibility, and doctors confirmed that he was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia as well as depression.

He was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment.
