The deadly COVID-19 pandemic has claimed a high profile government official in Nigeria. The Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria, Abba Kyari is dead.

In a press statement by Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity.

Mr. Adesina confirmed that Mallam Abba Kyari, the Chief of Staff died on Friday, April 17, 2020.

He said, “The Presidency regrets to announce the passage of the Chief of Staff to the President, Mallam Abba Kyari.

“The deceased had tested positive to the ravaging COVID-19, and had been receiving treatment. But he died on Friday, April 17, 2020.May God accept his soul.

“Funeral arrangements will be announced shortly.”

Abba Kyari has tested positive for coronavirus on his return to Nigeria in March 2020 from an official trip to Germany and Egypt. He was hospitalised at an infectious disease treatment center in Lagos and later moved to an unknown destination in Nigeria.

Kyari was born on 17 November 1938. He attended Borno Middle School and Barewa College, Zaria. In 1959 he enlisted in the Nigerian Army as an officer cadet. He later became commander of 1 Brigade at Kaduna and was subsequently second-in-command and then commander of the Nigerian Army’s artillery.
