While we African women are known for are bodacious derrieres and wear them with pride, western society has until very recently, mostly frowned upon curvaceous figures, despite Sir Mix-A-Lot’s proclamations.

Sir mix-a-lot likes big butts, and according to this recent study, so should you!
Sir mix-a-lot likes big butts, and according to this recent study, so should you!

Recent research, however has shown that having a big booty is something to aim for, as apparently the bigger your booty the smarter your baby is likely to be.

This is  according to a study which discovered that women of the bootylicious variety are more likely to have smarter children.

The study which was conducted by researchers at Pittsburg University found that the fats stored around a woman’s thighs and bum contribute to healthy brain development in babies, and lets a woman store extra nutrients in her body which can be used when she is breast feeding.

The fat around a woman’s buttocks and thighs, is often the hardest to lose which, according to researcher and author of ‘Why Women Need Fat’ Dr William Laseek, is because our bodies hold on to these fats to enable us to pass on nutrients to our children.

“You need lots of fat to make a nervous system and the fats in these areas [buttocks and thigh] are also enriched in DHA [docosahexaenoic acid] which is a particularly important component in the human brain,” Dr Laseek told the evening standard.

‘It looks as if women have evolved to accumulate these fats and hold on to them – until a baby arrives.’

Previous studies have also shown that it’s not only the babies with big bootied mommas that have high I.Qs.

Research of around 16,000 women found that women with larger hips are also likely to be smarter than their skinnier counterparts and scored higher on cognitive tests. This, however is down to hip to waist ratio, as the fat stored around the hips and bum is different to the fat stored elsewhere. Fat stored around the waist is high in omega-3 acids which is essential for brain development while the fat higher up on our waists and stomachs, is rich in Omega-6 acids, which really don’t do much.

So ladies, if you’re worried about the size of your A double five, don’t be. Chances are, you’re highly intelligent and your children will be too.
