Mr Antony Phillipson, British High Commissioner to the Republic of South Africa

Mr Antony Phillipson has been appointed British High Commissioner to the Republic of South Africa in succession to Mr Nigel Casey CMG MVO, who has transferred to another Diplomatic Service appointment. 

Mr Phillipson will take up his appointment in July 2021.

He was DTI, Desk Officer, Technology Programmes and Services Division in 1993 to 1994, DTI, Desk Officer, Competition Policy Division 1994 to 1995, DTI, Desk Officer, North American Trade Policy Unit 1995 to 1996, DTI, Private Secretary to the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry 1996 to 1998, DTI, Principal Private Secretary to the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry 1998 to 2000.

Antony Phillipson served in Washington as First Secretary Trade Policy 2000 to 2002, Counsellor Trade / Transport then Counsellor Global Issues 2002 to 2004. He was Private Secretary to the Prime Minister for Foreign Affairs at No 10 Downing Street 2004 to 2007FCO, Iran Co-ordinator, Middle East and North Africa Department 2007 to 2010.

He went on pre-posting training 2010 to 2011 and became British High Commissioner in Singapore, 2011 to 2015.

Mr. Phillipson was the Director, European & Global Issues Secretariat at the Cabinet Office 2015 to 2016 and DExEU, Director, Trade and Partnerships 2016 to 2017.

He served in North America as Her Majesty’s Trade Commissioner and New York, British Consul General 2017 till date.

Antony John Phillipson is married to Julie Elizabeth Phillipson and blessed with three sons.
