By Milton Tella – A young British woman of Nigerian descent, Chelsea Omoogun, is emerging as one of the fresh voices in British politics as she contests in the upcoming local council elections in Tower Hamlets scheduled for May 7.

Omoogun, an undergraduate at SOAS University of London, is standing as a candidate for the Green Party of England and Wales. Her candidacy is drawing attention among young voters and diaspora communities, particularly Nigerians in the United Kingdom, as she represents a new generation seeking greater youth participation in governance.

The Green Party has recently experienced a surge in popularity across the UK. Much of the momentum has been linked to the leadership of Zack Polanski, who has helped bring renewed energy and visibility to the party. The party also gained national attention following its recent by-election victory in Gorton and Denton, where Hannah Spencer secured a parliamentary seat for the Greens.

For Omoogun, however, the campaign is less about party momentum and more about ensuring that young people in her borough have a voice in the decisions that affect their lives.

“Youths need to be heard,” she said while speaking during her campaign. “We have been neglected for far too long. We need to talk about those youth centres that have closed. We need to look at re-engaging the youths. We need to hear them. We need to help them.”

Her campaign focuses on youth inclusion, civic participation and creating safe spaces for young people across the borough. Omoogun believes that rebuilding youth services and listening to the concerns of younger residents will help address deeper social challenges.

Despite the current rise in support for the Greens, she acknowledges that winning the trust of voters remains a significant task.

“We are listening,” she explained. “I knock on doors, speak to people and there is a lot we can do. People talk about their high bills, their housing problems, their having to choose between heating and eating. These are real problems that face us. These are the problems we intend to provide solutions to.”

If elected, Omoogun hopes to champion policies that address the cost-of-living crisis while also ensuring young people have a stronger voice in local politics.

Her candidacy reflects a growing trend of young people entering politics across the United Kingdom, and for many Nigerians in the diaspora, it represents another example of the community’s rising influence in British public life.
