A Hong Kong national has been caught trying to enter China with a total of 94 – that’s ninety-four – iPhones strapped to his body.
The phones, a variety of the latest iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models, were taped around the man’s torso, crotch, thighs and calves with decorators’ masking tape. Chinese customs has seized the haul.
The latest iPhones have been available in China for months, but smuggling stolen phones remains common as they are easy to sell on to young Chinese as an aspirational status symbol.
According to reports, so-called ‘mobile armour’ is a popular technique among lone phone smugglers, although the scale in this case is unusual. Customs officials noticed this particular smuggler due to his “weird walking posture, joint stiffness, and muscle tension,” according to Sina.com.
