“And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit,” – Eph. 5:18

By Michael Adekoya – Dear Readers, this week we shall briefly examine what is it to walk in the power of God. First of all, what does it mean to walk in the power of God?

Walking in the power of God means living a life that is aligned with God’s will, purpose, and strength. It’s about allowing God’s Spirit to guide and empower you to live in His ways and in the ways that we could not on our own. Here are some key elements of walking in God’s power.

Firstly, awareness of the Spirit of God in you – Act 2:38 – “Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptised in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Although many Believers today as still asking for the Holy Spirit that is already dwelling and living in them as a gift on the day they gave their lives to Jesus. They are not aware or conscious of His presence in their lives, therefore, they can not fellowship, relate or walk in His power.

Secondly, intimacy with God and total reliance on the Holy Spirit – John 15:5 – ““I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” One of the principal elements of walking in God’s power is a close relationship with Him. This involves consistent prayer, worship, and time in God’s Word. When we stay connected to God, His power flows through us naturally, giving us peace, joy, and strength for every situation. God’s power is made available to us through the Holy Spirit. Walking in His power means learning to be sensitive to the Spirit’s guidance and allowing Him to lead. The Spirit empowers us to overcome our own limitations and fills us with gifts like wisdom, discernment, and courage to face challenges with faith.

Thirdly, living by Faith – 2Cor. 5:7 – “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” Faith is crucial for accessing the power of God. Walking in faith means trusting in God’s promises even when circumstances look bleak or uncertain. Heb. 11:6 says, “Without faith it is impossible to please God,” reminding us that faith is the key to experiencing God’s power in our lives.

Fourthly, acting in obedience to the leading and promptings of the Holy Spirit – Jam. 1:20 – “But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?” As much as faith is crucial in walking in God’s power, it is useless if we don’t put our faith into action by obeying the Word of God and or the Holy Spirit promptings. God’s power is often released when we step out in obedience, even if it means stepping out of our comfort zones. Obedience demonstrates trust and faith in God and opens doors for Him to work in and through us. When we obey, God can use us to bless others and bring about change in our surroundings.

Furthermore, demonstrating love and compassion – Matt. 9:36 – “But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd.” Another important element of walking in the power of God is love and compassion as these are part of the nature of God and the fruit of the Holy Spirit. Selfishness is not of God, if anyone tries to walk in selfishness, it will be impossible for the power of God to walk through and in that person. Jesus walked in God’s power with a heart full of compassion, serving and loving others. When we choose to walk in the power of God, we are called to love people, serve them, and help those in need. This isn’t just about doing good deeds but being a vessel through which God’s love flows.

Moreover, praying with expectation and in spiritual authority – Jam. 5:16 – “Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.”  Prayer is not just about speaking to God but believing that He hears us and will act. When we pray with expectation, we align our hearts with God’s will, making room for His power to work through our requests. Not only that, God has given us authority over spiritual battles and challenges. Walking in God’s power means understanding and using the authority given through Christ to overcome obstacles, resist temptation, and stand firm against spiritual opposition. Jesus said, “Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” Luke 10:19. As Believers, we need to know who we are, what we have been freely given and walk boldly in the authority in the name of Jesus.

Finally, living within gratitude and endurance – Jam. 1:3 – “knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.” Due to the limited space, the last cogent element of walking in the power of God is to maintain the spirit of gratitude and to be patient. The reason for this is that we have to recognise that our strength and blessings come from Him. When we focus on gratitude, it fuels our faith and draws us closer to God, allowing His power to continue working for us. In addition to that, we have to be patient and put on the fruit of endurance. God’s power is often perfected in our weakness (2 Cor. 12:9). When we go through trials, we lean on God’s strength, not our own. His power sustains us, bringing peace and hope that surpasses our understanding, helping us to endure with grace.

In conclusion, walking in the power of God is to let Him work in every area of our lives, to become a willing vessel through which He can reach others. It is a life-long journey that requires faith, patience, surrender, and daily commitment, but in the end, it brings a deeper sense of purpose, peace, rewards, and fulfilment. Remain blessed!
