By Professor Rotimi Jaiyesimi – President Dr Hage G Geingob died in Windhoek, Namibia, surrounded by his family on the 4 February 2004.
President Geingob, a pan Africanist, was the third president of Namibia. He was the chairman of the constituent assembly that drafted the Namibian Constitution, one of the most liberal constitutions in the world that has served Namibia well.
A team from Adam Global Health went on a condolence visit to the Namibian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Her Excellency Linda Scott on 16 February 2024 to pay their respect to the late President. The team led by Prof Tahir Akthar, Founder Adam Global, included Prof Rotimi Jaiyesimi, President, Adam Global Health, Dr Ayman Khaier, Dr Jagwant Singh, Dr Tunde Macaulay, Mr Nagen Kumar, and Dr Patrick Uwubamwen offered its condolences. The team had carried out a medical mission to Namibia in January 2023 during which they were welcome by the late President and developed respect for him. This visit provided Adam Global Health an insight into a leader who cared greatly about the health and welfare of the Namibian people. Adam Global Health will continue in its efforts to strengthen Namibia’s health system.
Prof Rotimi Jaiyesimi represented Adam Global Health at a memorial service attended by Namibian diaspora in the United Kingdom on 17 February 2024. The High Commissioner Her Excellency Linda Scott extolled the virtues and values of the late President, describing him as a revolutionary at a time when it was life-threatening to do so and was icon of the liberation struggle for Namibian independence. He was a pan Africanist, a visionary leader with an indomitable spirit who spoke truth to power. Late President Geingob ensured the dignity of the people by strengthening processes, systems, institutions that deliver prosperity while building bridges of opportunity. He believed that no Namibian should be left behind in human and national development and was a strong advocate for inclusivity and gender equality. He nurtured the youths of Namibia for leadership, and this is evident in the composition of the government and its parastatals.
Tributes were paid by Pastor Petrus Undari, Mr Simon Amutjira, Ambassador Bonny Haufiku and the High Commissioner, Her Excellency Linda Scott. Professor Jaiyesimi read a poem at the memorial service espousing the role of the late President in nation building and placing a clarion call to Namibians to build on the growth and achievements gained during the tenure of President Geingob. He stated that as the sun dips below the horizon the legacy of the President is etched in the golden sand of Namibia.
Namibia and Africa have lost a great leader. Several activities have taken place in Namibia and other parts of the world in honour of the President. The State Funeral of His Excellency Dr Hage G. Geingob will take place in Windhoek on 24 – 25 February 2024. Our condolences go to the former First Lady, Her Excellency Monica Geingos, the children and family, and the people of Namibia.
