By Dapo Oshiyemi – Talking Drum Entertainment Ltd and Blackness Films Ltd have filed a lawsuit at the High Court in London against music producer Kani-Ayo Nwanze, also known as KaniBeatz, seeking the release of their soundtrack in his possession and significant damages for breach of contract and trust.

The multi-million pound debut film of Hakeem Kae-Kazim, “It’s the Blackness,” starring Daniel Davids, Matthew James Morrison, Dolapo Oni, Kalu Ikeagwu, and Kierath Jandoo, was scheduled for release in September. However, the release has been delayed due to Mr. Nwanze withheld the film’s ten-song soundtrack since February, in an effort to pressure the company to pay additional royalties to him.

Mr. Nwanze, who has claimed to work with artists such as Oxlade, Fireboy DML, Teni, and Joeboy, agreed to a contract and was compensated accordingly. Despite this, he has refused to release the soundtrack, which is essential for the completion and release of the film, after learning about a deal the company is negotiating with a major music label.

Dapo Oshiyemi, the Producer, developed, wrote, arranged, and created the technical music concepts for all ten songs, then hired Mr. Nwanze to work with various artists to produce the music on the soundtrack alongside him. Unfortunately, Mr. Nwanze’s decision to withhold the songs has led to significant delays, impacting the film’s release date and threatening the company’s financial stability. The livelihoods of over 100 people involved in the project have also been adversely affected.

The film “It’s the Blackness” is of significant cultural and social importance to the Black community, addressing themes and stories that are rarely represented in mainstream media. The delay not only impacts our company but also deprives the community of a vital cultural touchstone.
