By Olubunmi Omoogun – Democracy, they say, is the best system of government for protecting the rights of the people and advancing peace, economic prosperity, and freedom, because it is the only one in which governments are accountable to their people. While no democracy is perfect in practice, the system provides citizens with effective tools for course correction and improvement.

In democracy, it is also important to strengthen all the organs of government for the general good of the people and to engender a stable institutional structure that realizes the liberty and equality of citizens.

One of the democratic institutions is the National Assembly in Nigeria with a line-up of democrats working for their Constituents to enjoy the dividends of good governance.

One democrat that has been in the forefront of building an enviable working relationship between all arms of government as well as focusing on supporting the President of the Senate, His Excellency, Sen. Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON, to steer the ship of the 10th National Assembly for the greater good of all Nigerians, is the Leader of the Senate as well as the Senator representing the good people of Ekiti Central Senatorial District, Sen. Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, CON.

He is one of the notable personalities that is making democracy so impactful by delivering long-term stability, effectively serving, protecting the interest of the masses, as well as improving the welfare of the greater number of people in his Senatorial District. He is also setting his District and Nigeria on the path of prosperity.

Currently, the Leader of the 10th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Sen. Opeyemi Bamidele, with the prestigious national rank of the Command of the Order of the Niger (CON) has exemplified true leadership qualities, contributing to the growth and development of democracy as well as good governance in Nigeria.

A legal icon, accomplished public administrator, upwardly mobile, but distinguished in all ramifications.

Sen. Bamidele who is from Iyin Ekiti in Ekiti State, South West Nigeria, is proud to come from the beautiful city not too far from the capital city, Ado Ekiti.

Iyin Ekiti is also home to many prominent Nigerians including a former Governor of the old Western State of Nigeria, General Adeyinka Adebayo rtd., his son, His Excellency, Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo who like his father also became the first executive Governor of Ekiti State between 1999 and 2003 and later a minister of Industry, Trade and Investment under President Muhammadu Buhari. The City also boasts of several notable personalities such as the former National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) boss, Major General Olawunmi, the former Nigerian Ambassador to Hungary, Dr. Eniola Ajayi and many others.

For Sen. Opeyemi Bamidele, he sees his new role as the Leader of the Senate as an additional opportunity to serve his fatherland, having been a brilliant Senior Legislative Aide to the current President Tinubu (when the latter was a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 1993), a Special Adviser to governor of Lagos State. He was also a commissioner in Lagos State before joining the league of Federal Legislators when he represented his constituency in the House of Representatives in the 7th National Assembly.

In the 9th National Assembly he was Chairman, Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and legal matters before attaining the position of a Leader of the Senate in the 10th National Assembly.

In his current position in the Senate, he has been playing a significant role in the stability of the nation’s apex legislative house, helping to build a tradition of robust executive-legislative relations.

As an experienced Federal lawmaker, Bamidele’s zeal for fostering good governance for the people has never diminished. Always promoting positive stories of his beloved Ekiti State.

At an event to celebrate the 2024 edition of the annual Udiroko festival held at the palace of the Ewi of Ado Ekiti, His Royal Majesty, Oba Rufus Adeyemo Adejugbe Aladesanmi III, Sen. Bamidele said that,

“I promise not to disappoint the people of the state by making meaningful contributions at the National Assembly and by joining other patriots to project the image of the state”.

“I don’t joke with the promotion of Ekiti’s cultural heritage. Those of us who are your representatives in Abuja won’t disappoint you. We value your support and we won’t take it for granted. I will personally ask the Senate President and other committed Senators to tell me the projects they will sponsor and bring to Ekiti in the 2025 budget”.

Fuelled with a never-ending determination to increase the fortunes of his people, Bamidele has deliberately considered the interest of his people and have made it an integral part of his masterplan.
