Gay rights will not be discussed during talks with US President Barack Obama, Kenyan president Uhuru Kenyatta has said.
“The issue of gay rights is a non-issue for us, it is not on the agenda. We have serious issues that we will be addressing,” Kenyatta said on Tuesday.
Delivering an address at State House, Nairobi, on Obama’s impending visit, Uhuru said deputy president William Ruto will take part in talks with the US president.
“Ruto is part of this government. The US president will be hosted by the Kenyan government so he will meet the government including the DP,” he said.
Speaking after news that the US Supreme Court had legalised gay marriage in all 50 states, Ruto condemned homosexuality in Kenya saying there is “no room” for it in a society that worships God.
“We have heard that in the US they have allowed gay relations and other dirty things. I want to say as a Christian leader that we will defend our country Kenya, we will stand for our faith and our country,” he told attendants at the Africa Inland Church (AIC) Ziwani in Nairobi.
He asked Christians and Muslims to stand and defend their faiths and resist any attempts to legalise gay unions in the country, adding:
“No amount of persuasions, theories or philosophy will make us change our position. We believe in God, this is a God fearing nation and will continue to be so.”
