Southwark Labour has returned the best result in 30 years, sweeping the political map and making gains across the borough, including the Lib Dem Heartland in the north of the borough.

48 Labour councillors were elected in Southwark, including Nigerian Sunny Lambe who became a councillor in Bermondsey, he stated “the  historic results in South Bermondsey and particularly my election as a councillor in the ward, is a testimony to the power of community cohesion in Bermondsey. It is now to me and my elected colleagues to build on the results. Labour is work for all!.”

Labour gained 10 seats in the Bermondsey and Old Southwark, Lib Dem Simon Hughes’ constituency, where Newington ward Labour councillor Neil Coyle is fighting for the MP’s seat in 2015.

Labour Leader Peter John thanked the hundreds of Labour party members and volunteers who worked tirelessly throughout the campaign. He described the result as “the rejection of the coalition parties” in the borough and an endorsement of all that Labour has delivered in Southwark over the last 4 years.
He said: “This is a historic victory for Southwark Labour and demonstrates the wholehearted support of the people of the borough for our campaign to deliver a fairer future in Southwark. Labour has delivered on our promises over the last 4 years and we will now deliver the pledges we made in this campaign, including free swimming and gym use for all Southwark residents, 11,000 new council homes, and affordable childcare.

“The people of Southwark have rejected the negative campaign run by the Lib Dems – they recognise that Labour is the only party to put forward positive solutions to the problems in our borough. We will work hard to achieve these solutions and continue delivering a fairer future for all.”

  1. The election of Adedamola Ade Aminu as the new Mayor of London borough of Lambeth as well as Sunny Lambe as Councillor for Bermondsdey can be regarded as milestone victories for labour and Nigerians in the UK. in the case of Lambe, we see how labour has been able dig into the stronghold of the Lib Dem and to re-establish their dominance, making it the best result in 30 years. Labour should continue with the foray, and aim to win more seats in the 2015 elections. His victory has swelled the rank of councillors in the political map pf Britain and should be a clarion call for more Nigerians in the UK to be more politically conscious.
