In line with the policy thrust of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), which says ‘Determined to make a difference’, the Honourable representing Eseodo/Ilaje Federal Constituency of Ondo State, South West Nigeria in the House of Representatives, Hon. Kolade Victor Akinjo.
Has urged the House Committee on Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to investigate the abandonment of the Agadagba-Obong-Arogbo link Bridge contract so that NDDC can fulfil its policy thrust of truly making a difference.
Akinjo in his motion titled ‘Call for Investigation of the Abandoned Contract of Agadagba-Obong-Arogbo link Bridge’ on the floor of the House said ‘In September 2012, the Niger Development Commission (NDDC) awarded a contract for the Construction of Agadagba-Obong-Arogbo Road/Bridge with spur to Agwobiri-Egbesubiri Phase 1 to Piccolo-Brunelli Engineering Limited with a completion period of fifty-two weeks.
He noted that the project aimed at connecting the Ijaw Oil-bearing riverine communities of Ondo state to the mainland to ease the age long transportation challenges of the people, boosting their economic activities and making life more conducive has suddenly become an illusion owing to the abandoned contract.
Akinjo wants measures put in place to ensure the quick completion of the project. Nigeria has been bedevilled with reports of uncompleted projects across the length and breath of the country. The motion by this Federal Member of Parliament is seen as a welcome development which will draw the attention of the said agency to the bridge and bring succour to the people of the area he represents. The Speaker of the House of Representatives refer the matter to the House Committee on NDDC for further legislative action. NDDC was established in 2000 with the mission of facilitating the rapid, even and sustainable development of the Niger Delta into a region that is economically prosperous, socially stable, ecologically regenerative and politically peaceful in accordance with set rules and regulations, of projects and programs for sustainable development of the Niger Delta area in the field of transportation including roads, jetties and waterways, health, employment, industrialization, agriculture and fisheries, housing and urban development, water supply, electricity and telecommunications.
