By Milton Tella – Nigeria’s important role in the Commonwealth of Nations got a further boost this week as Ambassadors of different member states of the Commonwealth gathered in London for the ceremony to mark the day.

On 14 March 2022, the Commonwealth Day, the High Commissioner of Nigeria to the UK, His Excellency, Ambassador Sarafa Tunji Isola was at the forefront of the celebration, strengthening his country’s diplomatic ties with representatives of the 54 member countries of the Commonwealth and people across the United Kingdom who gathered to mark the 70 years of the reign of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Nigeria was well represented at the Westminster event by a strong delegation from the Nigeria High Commission London. The High Commissioners of Nigeria, Cameroon, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Malaysia joined together to celebrate in honour of The Queen’s leadership of the Nations, to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee and the 70th anniversary of her role as Head of the Commonwealth.

The representation by Nigeria anchored by Ambassador Sarafa Isola made presentations focused on the benefits of the Commonwealth to future generations.

Commonwealth Day is an annual celebration of the deep ties across the 54 countries of the Commonwealth and the shared values of prosperity, democracy and peace. Given that 2022 is Her Majesty the Queen’s Jubilee Year, there is a special focus on the role service plays in the lives of people and communities across the Commonwealth.

Commonwealth Day is annually celebrated on 14 March with a message from Her Majesty The Queen and a Commonwealth Service was held at Westminster Abbey.

Nigeria is one of the 72 nations and territories of the Commonwealth that the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games Relay will travel for 294 days, covering 140,000 kilometres.

The Queen’s Baton Relay marks the countdown to the biggest and most exciting sporting event around the world and encourages people to get involved in the Games, including the next generation of sporting heroes.

2022 is an exciting year of celebration for Commonwealth nations with the Games, Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and the Festival UK 2022 all taking place in the same year.

The Commonwealth is a unique association of 54 equal member states, and 2.4 billion people spanning six continents, and accounting for a third of the World Trade Organisation, a quarter of the G20, and a fifth of all global trade. Nigeria is a founding member of the modern Commonwealth, and home to nearly 50% of Commonwealth citizens. As a leading member, Nigeria’s Ambassador Sarafa Tunji Isola has his eyes set on the important benefits his country has to gain as a member.
