“I had no idea before the match I might break a record today – I’m always breaking records,” said Mohamed Salah after netting Liverpool’s opener against Lille on Tuesday in the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League league phase. The record in question was Salah becoming the first player in Liverpool’s history to score 50 goals in European competition.

Salah’s candid response comes as little surprise to those who have watched him at Liverpool over the previous seven-and-a-half years. The Egyptian has consistently set new highs for club and country, but this season, he seems more determined than ever to break further barriers.

Salah is enjoying one of his finest seasons to date, with the Egyptian King playing a part in 39 goals across 31 matches at the time of writing, scoring 22 and providing 17 assists. His average of 1.26 goal involvements per game is his highest for Liverpool to date, with his record-breaking 2017/18 season seeing him notch 52 goal contributions in 50 games across all competitions for a next-best 1.04.

Salah’s extraordinary performance and consistency have propelled Liverpool to the top of both the Premier League and the Champions League, while his feats in front of goal have seen him steadily climb the all-time lists this season. In Liverpool’s barmy 6-3 win at Spurs in December 2024, he became the club’s fourth all-time top scorer. Two assists a week later against West Ham also took him to 82 in the league, where he has taken David Beckham’s spot in 10th on the all-time tally.

With 39 combined goals and assists, Salah leads the way in Europe’s top five leagues, comfortably ahead of his compatriot Omar Marmoush (33 goals) and Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane (30 goals).

This year isn’t all about club success, however. While he remains committed to helping the Reds fight across four fronts, crucial international fixtures await with Egypt.

FIFA World Cup 26™ qualifiers resume in March, with The Pharaohs currently top of Group A with 10 points, four clear of Guinea-Bissau, with six games remaining. Salah, unsurprisingly, is joint-top of the continent’s qualifying goal stakes with five, and now sits ten behind Egypt’s all-time top scorer and current coach Hossam Hassan. The CAF Africa Cup of Nations, a competition Salah has led Egypt to the final of twice, kicks off in December, and runs until January 2026.

If Salah continues his electric form from 2024 into this year, then he will surely have one eye on claiming a first-ever The Best FIFA Men’s Player Award.

In the Premier League, Salah has already scooped Player of the Season honours, been awarded the Golden Boot and was recognised with the Playermaker Award after providing the most assists in 2021/22. Twice Africa’s Best Player, he will now set his sights on becoming the continent’s first player to receive FIFA’s top individual honour, after reaching the podium in both 2018 and 2021.

With Salah entering the final five months of his Liverpool contract, could he potentially cap his dazzling merseyside journey with his best year yet?
