By Olayiwola Balogun – The upcoming election in London offers the opportunity for over six million registered voters to throw their support behind candidates of their choice for Mayor of London, London Assembly and Parliamentary elections. What a great chance to change the face of London to reflect the true diversity of the city.
This election, which will hold in London on Thursday, May 6, 2021, presents an array of candidates from the Black, Asian Minority Ethnic communities that are willing to serve as the mayor of London and new London Assembly members.
For the mayor of London election, a historic 20 candidates are contesting. It is a close call between Shaun Bailey and Sadiq Khan.
Shaun Bailey is a British politician who has been a member of the London Assembly since 2016. A member of the Conservative Party, he is the party’s candidate for the forthcoming 2021 London mayoral election.
Shaun says, “London needs a fresh start. Sadiq Khan has failed to deliver and he is the next man for the job. He promises to give London a fresh start to move in the right direction. He will get 8,000 extra police officers on the streets, 4,000 youth workers to help young people. 100,000 homes for £100,000 using shared ownership. Each one of those homes will produce 2.4 jobs.
Sadiq Khan is a British politician serving as Mayor of London since 2016. He previously was Member of Parliament (MP) for Tooting from 2005 until 2016. A member of the Labour Party, Khan is on the party’s soft left and has been ideologically characterised as a social democrat.
Sadiq is seeking to be re-elected for the second time. His mantra is jobs, jobs, and jobs. Sadiq says, a green new deal, with a green skills academy, creating jobs for our young people is what London needs.
Niko Omilana is a young 23 year old African that appeals to the youths, an independent candidate who according to ITV London News poll is the first choice for some five percent of Londoners is one to watch out for.
Nims Obunge, an independent candidate is another alternative choice to the two top contenders. Obunge is the CEO of The Peace Alliance. The church organisation works nationally with key statutory agencies such as the Home Office and the Metropolitan Police advising on key policy issues. Nims recently stepped aside as a Deputy Lieutenant for Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant for Greater London.
Obunge wants to ensure knife crime is reduced, violent crime against young children. He said London is not just losing lives to knife crime, but also losing them to the prison system.
Other candidates for the mayor of London include Luisa Porritt, Liberal Democrats, Brian Rose, London Real Party, Valerie Brown – The Burning Pink Party, Mandu Reid – The Women’s Equality Party, David Kurten – Heritage Party, Kam Balayev, Renew, Sian Berry, Green Party, Count Binface, Count Binface for Mayor of London, Piers Corbyn, Let London Live, Max Fosh, Independent, Laurence Fox, Reclaim Party, Peter Gammons, UKIP, Richard Hewison, Rejoin EU, Vanessa Hudson, Animal Welfare Party, Steve Kelleher, Social Democratic Party, Farah London, Independent and Niko Omilana, Independent.
One notable female candidate in the election for the Green Party is London Assembly for Greenwich & Lewisham Constituency is Rosamund Adoo-Kissi-Debra. Rosamund is eager to see UK sets stricter limits on air pollution.
