IROKO Theatre Company is delighted to invite you to the launch of its innovative new project, ‘Speaking without Voice’ on Friday 11th January, 2019 at Stratford Library, 3 The Grove, Stratford, E15 1EL from 6.00pm – 7.30pm.
‘Speaking without Voice’ is made possible by money raised by National Lottery players awarded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), the £97,300 18-months research project, to raise awareness of a variety of Nigerian precolonial nonverbal communication systems (symbols and various rhythmic communication methods), some of which were banned by the British colonial administration in Nigeria.

Come and find out more about the “strange language” that the British colonial administration could not decode, plus how young British-Nigerians are using the heritage to underpin their cultural identity. It promises to be a fascinating insight into an aspect of Nigerian-British heritage that is little known. Demonstrations, hands-on experience, plus refreshments, will be available!
