Home From Home: to celebrate People of Nigerian Descent in Britain

The unveiling of some prominent and influential British-Nigerians, who have made significant contributions to the British society this century, will take place in London on Saturday 7th October 2023.

The conference titled ‘Legacy of People of Nigerian Descent in Britain’ is the researched work of IROKO Theatre Company made possible with funding from the Heritage Fund.

The one-day historic conference will engage in thought-provoking discussions, gain insights into the challenges faced by the community and celebrate the remarkable achievements that have shaped the fabric of British society.

Esteemed speakers and experts will explore various aspects of the British-Nigerian legacy, including history, art, music, culture and identity, exhibitions and live performances at the University of East London, Stratford Campus, University Square Stratford, 1 Salway Road, London, E15 1NF.

The historic exhibition and performances will reveal privileged materials, images and profiles to be archived for generations unborn. The ceremony is expected to run from 10.30 am – 4.00 pm.

  • Lekia Lée, Journalist, Image Activist, Founder Project Embrace: “Hair As Identity.”
  • Hassan Aliyu FRSA, President of Nigeria Art Society UK: “Contemporary Nigerian Artists in Britain”.
  • Juwon Ogungbe FRSA, Composer, Singer, Educationalist: “The Legacy of Musicians of Nigerian Descent in the UK’s Music Eco-system”.
  • Florence Ọlájídé, Educator & Author of ‘Coconut’ and ‘My Culture Yoruba’: “Race and Identity.”
  • Dr Michelle Yaa Asantewa, Founder of Way Wive Wordz Publishing “African indigenous spirituality and the Osun River Ritual”
