Teenagers across the nation will be informed of their provisional results this week. Congratulations to ALL the students who hit their target grades. Due to the decreased success rate of this cohort of students, Multi-award winning educator and mentor, Professor Chris Imafidon, chair of the record breaking inner city educational programme of www.ExcellenceInEducation.org.uk provides guidance for some students who may fall short of the expected minimum grades to continue their studies. Excel Tutors Institute of London’s Commercial Road, London E1 in Whitechapel is also running a physical clinic to guide parents and pupils.
GRADES Versus ABILITY
Those finding out their final grades will be forgiven for thinking that they are either straight “A” students or not academically bright. The bitter truth is that Examinations are not the best determinant of future life successes particularly headline grades. Furthermore, these are only PROVISIONAL, and are therefore, subject to change.
However, today is still seen as a big day for 15 and 16-year-old students who will be receiving their GCSE grades. This cohort is particularly unique as their education was severely disrupted by the Covid lockdown, associated severe illness, or even death of family members. Unfortunately, the government and examination authorities are no longer taking their circumstances into consideration as they did with their predecessors. Therefore, their grades are depressed. So it is extremely important that we advise pupils and parents on what they should do if their predicted grades are not realized on results day. We will explain the various steps needed to query their results, ask for a re-mark, or access to scripts. We will also advise on how to compare their raw score to UMS, and understand how the UMS scores are graded. And then calculate how each awarded grade is to the grade boundaries. Additionally, we will refer them to the award-winning ExcellenceInEducation.org.uk website, which has helped students in past years to improve their grades.
The Importance of GCSE Results
GCSE results are essential as they tend to determine the next move in a student’s educational journey. They are the gateway to higher education, apprenticeships, job-training and employment opportunities. Unfortunately, the Covid pandemic has disrupted the education of this cohort, and their grades may not reflect their true potential. Therefore, it is essential to know what to do if their predicted grades are not realized on results day.
Steps to Query Results, Ask for a Re-Mark, or Access to Scripts
If a student is unhappy with their GCSE results, they can take the following steps:
- Speak to their Examination officer rather than subject teacher or school head: The first step is to speak to their Examination officer NOT teacher or school to understand how their grades were calculated and why they did not meet their expectations.
- Request a re-mark: If a student believes that their grade is incorrect, they can request a re-mark. The deadline for requesting a re-mark is usually mid-September.
- Access to scripts: Students can request access to their exam scripts to understand how their grades were calculated.
- Appeal: If a student is still unhappy with their grade after a re-mark, they can appeal to the exam board.
- Visit Excel Tutors Institute of London’s Commercial Road, London E1 in Whitechapel which is also running a physical clinic to guide parents and pupils.
Comparing Raw Score to UMS and Determining Grade Boundaries
For students who wrote OCR, Edxcel, AQA or other exam board exams, It is essential to compare a subject’s raw score to UMS (Uniform Mark Scale) to determine how close they are to the grade boundaries. The UMS is a way of converting raw marks into a uniform scale to ensure fairness across different exam papers. Students can use the UMS converter at ExcellenceInEducation.org.uk or on the exam board’s website to determine their UMS score and compare it to the grade boundaries.
