Narc-Kenya party leader Martha Karua has declared that her two-year “political sabbatical” is now over.
The former Gichugu MP had kept a low profile after her dismal performance in the 2013 presidential election.
Speaking at Mirogi Girls Secondary School in Homa Bay County, Ms Karua also objected to any reference to her as a “former” presidential candidate.
“I want to announce here that I am a future presidential candidate. I am getting ready after stumbling in 2013.
“I will continue knocking, as the Bible says, until the door is opened for me,” she said at the weekend.
Ms Karua reiterated that she would continue her fight against tribalism and corruption.
“I will not surrender in the fight against tribalism. I am a Kenyan first and my tribe comes second,” she said.
The former Justice Minister was the guest speaker during the third summit of “Mama County Says”, a mentorship programme organised by Homa Bay Woman Rep Gladys Wanga. The programme aims to inspire young women. Ms Karua asked women to support each other during elections.
“The current Constitution guarantees equality and there is need for women to support their own during elections,” she said.
She challenged parents to be good role models to their children if they expect them to succeed in future.
“There is no way you can mentor your son or daughter if you do the opposite of what you preach to them,” she said. She praised Ms Wanga for coming up with the unique programme but was quick to point out that boys should also not be forgotten.
Ms Wanga pledged to continue with the programme, which she noted had immensely benefitted the girls.
“In the 2014 KCSE results a girls’ school like Asumbi had 43 plain As and 124 A minuses, an indication of a better future for our county,” she added.
