FCDO Minister hosts Ambassadors of African nations in London

By Milton Tella – The UK Minister of State (Development & Africa) at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), Andrew Mitchell MP hosted High Commissioners and Ambassadors of African nations at Lancaster House, London on Thursday, 2 March, 2023.

Major discussions at the gathering focussed on debt relief efforts, climate change and building capacity for sustainable development in Africa.

In appreciation of the roles of the representatives of the different African countries to the UK, Rt Hon. Andrew Mitchell MP said, “Our long-term partnerships throughout Africa are driving forward security, prosperity and our common interests and values wherever possible.”

Among the prominent Ambassadors of African countries to the United Kingdom present at the gathering of the crème de la crème of diplomats were the Dean of Africa Diplomatic Corp Ambassador Estifanos Habtemariam of Eritrea, Ambassador Sarafa Tunji Isola High commissioner for Nigeria in the United Kingdom and Ambassador Asha Rose High Commissioner for Tanzania in the United Kingdom.

Speaking to journalists on behalf of the African Ambassadors, His Excellency, Sarafa Tunji Isola OFR, said, “A gathering such as this, provides opportunity to increase multilateral understandings between FCDO and Africa’s top diplomats.”

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office is the department that delivers for the UK internationally, leading the Government’s diplomatic, development and consular work around the world. It was created in September 2020 following the merger of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Department for International Development.
