
His Royal Majesty, Oba Jimoh Olayinka Gbolagade Tiamiyu II (22 November 1946 – 30th March 2025), a man of mission, passion, and action, who was crowned as The Olojo of Ojo on May 30, 1991, joined his ancestors on 30th March 2025. Dignitaries from far and wide will gather in the ancient town for the Grand Fidau on Saturday 14 June 2025 at the African Voice International Institute in Ojo, Ede/Ejigbo Road, Egbedore Local Government Area, Osun State, Nigeria.
As a monarch, Oba Olayinka remained a beacon of leadership, balancing his royal duties with his entrepreneurial spirit as a successful baker and poultry farmer. He was not only a leader but also a loving husband and a proud father, whose journey in life is a testament to resilience, faith, and unwavering dedication to his people.
At his prime age, Prince Olayinka ventured into the bread-making industry, establishing Oluwalomose Bakery in Ejigbo, Osun State. His hard work and business acumen led to rapid growth, with branches sprouting in Ilobu and Ojo, and a direct supply license from Nigeria Flour Mill, Apapa, Lagos. In these years, he was not just baking bread; he was laying the foundation of a legacy. Earlier in 1987, Olayinka was elected Councillor of Olobu ward 1, Ilobu.
Prince Olayinka was a man of deep faith. His spiritual journey took him to the holy land of Mecca in 1981 and again in 2005, affirming his devotion as a devout Muslim. His quest for knowledge and business acumen saw him travel to Hong Kong in 1986, expanding his horizons beyond the shores of Nigeria.
Development of Ojo Town
Since his enthronement on May 30, 1991, Oba Olayinka Gbolagade Tiamiyu II JP, the Olojo of Ojo has been a transformative force in the socio-economic and cultural development of Ojo Town. His visionary leadership and tireless efforts have not only advanced his community but have also significantly uplifted it.
Attracting Development Partners and Organizations
Oba Olayinka has effectively used his influence to attract international organizations such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) to Ojo. Through his connections, the town has gained access to developmental programs, which have significantly improved the lives of its residents. Notably,(Late) Dr. Michael Warren of Iowa University, USA, was motivated by Oba Olayinka’s vision to establish a nursery and primary school in Ojo, providing education to local children and donating essential materials for its sustainability.
Infrastructure Development
One of the most visible impacts of Oba Olayinka’s leadership is the transformation of Ojo’s infrastructure. In 1993, he saw to the tarring of the Ede-Ojo-Ara-Ejigbo road, making transportation easier for residents and boosting trade. He also saw to the extension of pipe-borne water and the provision of electricity in the community, ensuring that basic amenities were accessible to the people. His efforts in extending and creating new roads have given Ojo a well-planned layout, positioning it for future expansion.
Under his reign, Ojo witnessed the construction of an ultra-modern town hall,. Oba Olayinka also initiated the building of the Onimolodun Ruling House, and palace mosque a testament to his commitment to preserving the town’s royal heritage. His collaboration with UNDP led to the construction of public toilets and water tanks, further enhancing public health and sanitation.
Promotion of Education and Tourism
Oba Olayinka’s passion for education is evident in his role in establishing Ojo/Aro Grammar School, which has provided quality education to generations of young people. He also founded Owode Market. His commitment to tourism has transformed Ojo into a cultural destination, attracting students from prestigious institutions like Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, who visit annually to study the town’s rich history and cultural heritage.
Economic Empowerment and Industrial Growth
The Olojo of Ojo has made substantial contributions to the town’s economic landscape. He facilitated the establishment of two filling stations and a bakery at Oke-Ola, creating job opportunities for residents. His support for agricultural development led to the establishment of Agro-Allied Industry and one of the largest farms in Osun State, GS Agric as the largest firm in Osun State, others are Aviham Agric.
Cultural Preservation, Recognition and Elevation of Olojo’s Throne
Oba Olayinka has elevated the status of Ojo both locally and internationally. His dedication to cultural preservation is reflected in the annual Ojo Day celebration, which he initiated in 1999, bringing together indigenes and showcasing the town’s cultural values. Through various media broadcast, print, and social media he has projected the cultural heritage of Ojo to the world.
His reign has also witnessed the elevation of the Olojo throne to a prestigious position. In 2004, the Olojo of Ojo was recognized as a Part II Oba under the Chief Laws of Osun State. By January 14, 2008, his seat was further elevated to that of a permanent member of the Osun State Council of Obas and Chiefs, affirming his commitment to the throne of Olojo.
Diplomacy and Unity
Oba Olayinka worked tirelessly to strengthen ties with neighbouring communities. He paid numerous visits to places where the descendants of Ojo sought refuge during historical wars, encouraging them to reconnect with their ancestral homeland. His active participation in local, state, national, and international summits, including his role as part of the traditional entourage of the Ooni of Ife to the Republic of Benin, has further reinforced his reputation as a respected traditional ruler.
In every sense, Oba Olayinka’s reign has been one of growth, progress, and unity for Ojo, making him a legend whose contributions will be remembered for generations; no wonder is sometimes addressed as the maker of modern Ojo Town.
Death of a Legend
Sadly, on 30th March 2025, Oba Olayinka Gbolagade Tiamiyu JP (Onimolodun II), the revered Olojo of Ojo, departed this world, joining his illustrious forebears. His passing marked the end of an era characterized by visionary leadership, unwavering dedication to his people, and remarkable contributions to the socio-economic and cultural development of Ojo. A man of integrity, wisdom, and compassion, Oba Olayinka’s legacy is etched in the hearts of his people. His demise left a void not only in Ojo but also across the Yoruba race, where his influence and impact were deeply felt. He will forever be remembered as “The Maker of Modern Ojo.”
