Up to 21 people have been killed in Danathru, a town in Yobe State, North-eastern Nigeria as football fans gathered to watch the Brazil-Mexico match on Tuesday afternoon.
Reports say the people had gathered to watch the match when a suicide bomber in a tricycle taxi detonated the bomb, killing many and injuring even more. Trucks carried bodies to a nearby hospital. A hospital spokes person told the Guardian: “We received 21 dead bodies and 27 injured victims. He added , “the bodies are being kept in the morgue while the injured are receiving treatment at the accident and emergency unit before they are moved to the ward. The victims are young men and children. They have burns, ruptured tissue and bone fractures”
No group has claimed responsibility for the bombing, although Boko Horam, who have been inflicting terror throughout Nigeria for the past four years, are thought to be behind the attack. The group have previously said that they are against football, which the believe is another form of western influence.
Nigeria’s government has warned people about gathering outside to watch the World Cup matches, particular in places where terror attacks have become common place. Viewing centres, which are popular amongst Nigerians, have also been banned in Yobe and it’s surrounding states which have been declared as states of emergency.
