Low Cost Construction Materials and Methods for the MINT Countries

The Engineering Forum of Nigerians – EFN (UK) is the apex professional forum of UK based engineering professionals of Nigerian descent and others with demonstrable commitment to Nigeria’s development. EFN collaborates with the mainstream engineering professional bodies in

Nigeria and is actively involved in various initiatives to influence the development of the country.

The annual Spring Event is our flagship infrastructure conference which over the last 10 years has taken place in the United Kingdom and attended by numerous organisations and professional bodies from across the globe. It has consistently provided an excellent platform to highlight initiatives that promote capacity building, job creation, strategic advice and opportunities for foreign investment in Nigeria.

The theme of this year’s event is ‘Low Cost Construction Materials and Methods for the MINT

Countries’’. This is in recognition of our contribution to meeting the Millennium Development Goal 7

targets which seeks to improve the lives of people by ensuring environmental sustainability through:

1. Good housing conditions and related infrastructures such as roads contribute to a good environmental and improvement in the lives of slum-dwellers;

2. Use of environmentally-friendly construction materials, including energy-efficient materials, contributes to environmental protection;

3. Good housing and urban design are cornerstones for mitigating ecological footprints of settlements and reducing vulnerability to climate change.

By hosting this conference at this timely period, EFN UK is looking to provide a platform to further explore and elaborate on innovative ways to address the provision of low costs and sustainable building material if commodity producing MINT countries, such as Mexico, Indonesia, Nigeria and Turkey are to be the next emerging economic giants. There is huge misconception that low cost structures are only suitable for substandard works and they are constructed by utilizing cheap building materials of low quality. However, the use of low costs and sustainable materials when combined with techniques which helps to reduce cost of construction through the use of locally available materials along with improved skills and technology without sacrificing the strength, performance and life of structure is what these countries needed to grow and sustained the economy. Examples of this are common in developed countries where recycled aggregates are used for road construction.

The conference will bring together distinguished guests such as Arch Mike Onolememen, Minister of Works, Prof. Danladi S. Matawal DG/CEO, Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute, Engr. Gabriel Amuchi MD/CEO, Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Dr Kunle Onabolu CEO, KAO Projects Solution, International Financial Institutions, Developers and a host of organisations from Nigeria and other parts of the world. It is an opportunity to meet majority of corporate investors, service providers and professionals under one roof.

‘Low Cost Construction Materials and Methods for the MINT Countries’ follows previous highly successful conferences organised by the EFN.
