Vice President Kamala Harris

DEMO-CRAZY or DEMOCRACY IN THE USA- Pt2 Or how did an assassin’s bullet hit history again by eliminating Biden’s faint hope of 2nd term?

By Professor Chris Imafidon – The current race to the White House in the United States has upended all predictions and analyses. From President Joe Biden’s last-minute withdrawal to an assassination attempt on Donald Trump, and the emergence of Vice President Kamala Harris as presidential hopeful, these are indeed unprecedented crazy times. But in January 2021 on the pages of a British newspaper, some of these strange things seem to have been predicted. To confirm the new drama, early backers of Ms Kamala Harris raised Democrat donations to spike by $50m within hours – as their party’s fundraising platform seeing its biggest day.

Implications for Kamala Harris and the Democratic Party

Vice President Kamala Harris’s candidacy, endorsed by President Biden, has quickly gained support from key Democratic figures and leaders. Governors such as Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan, and JB Pritzker of Illinois have publicly backed Harris, emphasizing the need for unity to prevent a Trump resurgence. This support strengthens Harris’s position within the party, potentially deterring other prominent Democrats from challenging her for the nomination. However, Harris faces significant challenges. Despite the unified front, her approval ratings are similar to Biden’s, and she has struggled with key issues during her vice presidency, such as the migration crisis and abortion rights. Public opinion remains divided, and her ability to galvanize the broader electorate will be crucial. The Democratic convention in Chicago is expected to be dynamic and possibly contentious if Harris cannot unify the party effectively.

Impact on Donald Trump

The assassination attempt on Trump has energized his base, and Biden’s withdrawal further complicates the Republican strategy. Initially focused on contrasting Trump’s perceived strength with Biden’s frailty, the GOP will now need to recalibrate its approach against Harris or any other emerging Democratic candidate. Trump’s campaign will likely continue to leverage his resilience and leadership image, bolstered by the recent attempt on his life.

Social Media Views of Rev. Al Sharpton

Reverend Al Sharpton, a prominent civil rights activist and supporter of VP Harris, has weighed in on the evolving political scenario. Sharpton has expressed concerns about the political climate and the potential for increased violence and division. On social media, he condemned the assassination attempt on Trump, emphasizing the need for peaceful political discourse and the protection of all public figures, regardless of their political affiliations. Sharpton has also highlighted the importance of addressing systemic issues affecting marginalized communities. He has urged the Democratic Party to focus on policies promoting social justice, economic equality, and criminal justice reform. Sharpton’s advocacy resonates with a significant portion of the Democratic base, and his support for Harris would help her campaign address these critical areas more effectively.

Electoral Prospects and Strategies

For the Democrats, the immediate task is to rally behind Harris and present a cohesive front. Harris’s campaign infrastructure and substantial funds provide a strong foundation, but she must address the broader electorate’s concerns and demonstrate her capability to lead effectively. The support from influential Democratic figures suggests a strategic alignment to consolidate resources and efforts towards her candidacy. For Trump, the focus will be on maintaining the momentum gained from the assassination attempt and capitalizing on the perceived instability within the Democratic ranks. His campaign will likely emphasize Harris’s perceived weaknesses and the challenges faced during her vice presidency, aiming to sway undecided voters and solidify his base.

Likely Winners and Losers

Winners:

  • Kamala Harris: With Biden’s endorsement and substantial party support, Harris is in a strong position to secure the Democratic nomination. Her challenge will be to translate this support into broad electoral appeal.
  • Donald Trump: The assassination attempt has galvanized his supporters and provided a narrative of resilience and leadership, potentially boosting his electoral prospects.

Perceived Changes:

  • Joe Biden: His withdrawal, while necessary, underscores concerns about his cognitive health and leaves a mixed legacy as he exits the race.
  • Democratic Unity: The potential for intra-party conflict remains high, especially if Harris struggles to unify the party and address the electorate’s concerns effectively.

In conclusion, Biden’s withdrawal has set the stage for a high-stakes and unpredictable 2024 election. It makes democracy look like a crazy situation engineered by demos.  Harris’s ability to consolidate Democratic support and address key issues will be critical, while Trump will aim to leverage his renewed momentum to reclaim the presidency. The evolving political drama, or landscape promises a contentious and closely watched race with significant implications for the future of American politics and global democracy.
