Dean of the Diplomatic Corp visits Nigeria High Commission London

By Milton Tella – On Wednesday, 29th September 2021, Ambassador of Eritrea, His Excellency, Estifanos Habtemariam Ghebreyesus, who is also the Dean of Africa Diplomatic Corp paid a courtesy visit on His Excellency, Ambassador Sarafa Tunji Isola, the Nigeria High Commissioner to the UK at his office in Northumberland Avenue London, to discuss areas of mutual interests in Eritrea-Nigeria relationship.

During the visit, both parties were expected to have discussed ranging issues of interest, including the brutal civil war in the Tigray region of Ethiopia, the conflict that has killed an estimated 50,000 civilians and displaced approximately 2 million people.

Ambassador Isola has been described as one of the leading and influential African diplomats in London. He is known to be a champion of African solutions to African problems.

The two ambassadors played active roles in the Africa Day 2021 celebration in London, which was held virtually on Tuesday 15th June with the theme, ‘Levers for Building the Africa We Want’. The opening remarks were delivered by His Excellency, Estifanos Habtemariam Ghebreyesus Ambassador of the State of Eritrea to UK & Ireland and Hon. James Duddridge, Under Secretary of State for Africa at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). The event attracted many diplomats from other African embassies in the UK.

Ambassador Estifanos Habtemariam Ghebreyesus, as the Dean of Africa diplomatic Corp, is the senior diplomatic representative of the Africa Diplomatic Corps who has served the longest in the United Kingdom.  He is believed to have also used the visit to discuss other matters relating to strengthening bilateral ties between Eritrea and Nigeria as well as global challenges as a result of Covid-19.
