Stacey Dash has filmed a video of herself reading out tweets sent to her following her awkward appearance on stage at Sunday night’s Oscars.
Host Chris Rock introduced the actress and FOX News contributor as “the new director of our minority outreach program” which was a reference to the fact that Dash has spoken out about the #OscarsSoWhite controversy and boycott and questioned the celebration of Black History Month.
Dash, who is of West Indian heritage and a first cousin of Damon Dash, argued that the BET Awards lied to black people about news regarding the boycotting of the Oscars due to lack of ethnic diversity, and called for an end to Black History Month.
On stage she said, “Happy Black History Month” but the joke went above the heads of audience members and, in all likelihood, viewers at home.
Stars including model (and Mrs John Legend) Chrissy Teigen and Black Canadian singer The Weeknd were visibly unimpressed with Dash’s appearance.
“I just walked off stage from the Oscars where I got no applause, no boos, nothing,” Dash says in the video which was filmed backstage on Sunday night.
“People were, I think, awestruck. Which was a little disappointing. But I did it because I wanted to. I stand in my position, and Chris asked me to do it and I love him and I support him.”
Dash, who played Alicia Silverstone’s character Cher’s best friend Dionne in the 1995 hit comedy movie, Clueless, then read out some of the more unkind tweets aimed at her, including: “no one likes you”, “you looked foolish and sounded dumb”, and “You Sucked on the Oscars like you do on Fox News”.
Another said, “I was hoping there was a trap door on stage and @REAL Stacey Dash would fall through”.
“There are a lot of people who don’t agree with me and have a lot of very mean things to say,” she said.
“But here’s the thing: I do what I want to do because I want to do it, and because I believe in it, and it has nothing to do with race. And I wish you would stop saying that. Everything I do is because I believe in it, and I believe we are all equal.”
“I’m very happy about what I did and I’m proud of it,” she added.
