By Milton Tella – Since the outcome of the 2023 presidential elections in Nigeria, dignitaries of all shades have been visiting the Nigeria High Commission London.
Congratulatory messages have been pouring in through the High Commissioner in the United Kingdom to the President Elect, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The British High Commissioner designate to Nigeria – His Excellency Richard Montgomery paid a courtesy visit and had extensive discussions with the High Commissioner of Nigeria, Ambassador Sarafa Tunji Isola at the Nigeria High Commission, London on Thursday, 2 March 2023.
He said, “I am very conscious you have steered the Nigeria-UK relationship in a very positive direction on a number of fronts. I look forward to seeking your advice and insights, and l hope we can work in partnership to build on this progress in the months and years to come.”
Ambassador Isola gave Mr Montgomery a warm welcome and wished him well in his assignment ahead in Nigeria.
Also, the Foreign Secretary James Cleverly gave a statement on behalf of the British government about the process and outcome of the 2023 Nigerian presidential elections.
The Foreign Secretary James Cleverly, said, “The United Kingdom commends Nigerian voters for their participation in the Presidential and National Assembly elections and for their patience and resilience in exercising their democratic rights. We congratulate the President Elect, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
We note the position of opposition parties on the election outcome and the concerns expressed by observer missions and civil society about the organisation of the process, including delays and technical challenges.
We encourage the authorities to examine all concerns carefully, take action to resolve outstanding issues and focus on delivering the will of the Nigerian people.”
The Nigeria High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, His Excellency Sarafa Tunji Isola OFR, also received in audience, the Presidential Committee on the review of number and strategy for resourcing Nigeria’s Diplomatic Missions worldwide at the Nigeria High Commission on Thursday, 2 February 2023.
The team was led by the former Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bulus Z. Lolo.
The primary purpose of the visit was to have an on-the-spot assessment of the Nigeria High Commission, London as a grade “A” Mission, and to interact with the officers in line with the term of reference (TOR) given to the Presidential Committee for an unbiased report and recommendation to President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR.
