A fun filled event celebrating African culture in connection with London’s Black History Month celebrations will take place this weekend (October 11th) on London’s famous Trafalgar Square.
Africa on the Square, which has been organised by cultural organisation Open the Gate which aims to promote a positive image of Africa and is supported by Mayor of London Boris Johnson, will feature a range of performances, shows and market stalls, which will showcase the best of African culture and tradition.
An exclusive fashion show, directed by African Fashion Week London and Simplicious (African Street Style Festival) showcasing contemporary African fashion designers will feature as part of the day while Africa on the Square Celebrates Talent (ACT) a talents show for under 25s, is said to be the event’s highlight.
In addition to the fashion show and ACT there will also be performances by a range of African artists including Dele Sosimi’s Afrobeat Experience (Nigeria); Gnawa Griot featuring Simo Lagnawi (Morocco) and Jally Kebba Susso (Gambia); Aar Maanta (Somalia); Anna Mudeka Band (Zimbabwe/South Africa); and Baba Adesose Wallace (West Africa). There will be a West African drumming circle, plus African acrobats and dancers. Rita Ray, “renowned for bringing global sounds to dancers and music fans around the world will DJ the event.”
There will also be an African Market with fashion, art, food, as well as activities for families and children including bead making, hair braiding and Batik making. The African Voice Newspaper team will also be in attendance.
“London is home to a large and diverse number of African communities, who contribute to the cultural and economic life of the capital and reinforce the historic ties we have to that great continent,” Boris Johnson stated. “As we mark Black History Month I am delighted to be welcoming this celebration of African culture to Trafalgar Square. It will be an opportunity for all Londoners to explore Africa’s rich heritage and traditions.”
The event is sponsored by Lebara, The Voice Newspaper and, Air France, who will be given attendees a chance to win tickets to Nigeria.
