By Professor Chris Imafidon, a friend, and colleague who had hope that Bishop Dorgu would officiate at his daughter’s St Paul Cathedral wedding in London but couldn’t make it due to ill-health.
The Rt. Revd Dr Woyin Karowei Dorgu, the Bishop of Woolwich, passed away on September 8, 2023, due to ill-health. He was the first-ever bishop of African extraction appointed by Queen Elizabeth II after Bishop Sentamu in 1996 of York. He was a close friend me and my family, and we had hope that he will officiate at my eldest daughter’s wedding about two years ago, however to Rt. Rev Dorgu’s health, he could not attend the wedding which took place at St Paul’s Cathedral, London. About 12 months later everyone was reunited at another wedding at the Holy Trinity Brompton in Lodnon. Bishop Dorgu is survived by his dear wife, Dr Mosun Dorgu, a child psychiatrist, his twin sister, and his son. It is extremely difficult to know how to right a tribute to celebrate a man full of conviction, humility, dedication, devotion, and excellent selfless service.
Humility:
Bishop Dorgu was known for his humility, which was evident in the way he conducted himself both in his personal and professional life. He was a man of faith who was committed to serving his community. Despite his numerous achievements, he remained humble and approachable. He was always willing to listen to others and was known for his kindness and compassion. He was a true servant of God who lived his life according to the teachings of Jesus Christ.
Dedication:
Bishop Dorgu was a dedicated servant of God who served the Church of England, Community and even “strangers” with distinction until his death. He was a man of great faith who was committed to spreading the gospel and helping those in need. He was an advocate for religious freedom and human rights and spoke out against the persecution of Christians in the UK, Africa and the commonwealth. He used his position to advocate for the marginalized and oppressed. He was a true leader who inspired others to follow in his footsteps and he championed equity.
Devotion:
Bishop Dorgu was devoted to his family, his faith, and his community. He was a loving husband, father, and brother who always put the needs of others before his own. He was a man of great faith who was devoted to spreading the undiluted gospel and helping strangers in need.
Excellent Service:
Bishop Dorgu’s service to the Church of England was exemplary. He was appointed as the 13th Bishop of Woolwich in March 2017, succeeding Bishop Michael Ipgrave. He was responsible for the Woolwich Episcopal Area, which includes the boroughs of Greenwich and Bexley. He was the only black bishop to be consecrated in the Church of England since Sentamu in 1996. He was known for his commitment to his work and his dedication to his community. He was a man of great integrity who was respected by all who knew him.
In conclusion, the Rt. Revd Dr Woyin Karowei Dorgu was a man of great faith who served the Church of England with distinction until his death. He was the first-ever bishop of African extraction appointed by Queen Elizabeth II after Bishop Sentamu in 1996 of York. He was known for his humility, dedication, devotion, and excellent service. His death is a great loss to the Church of England, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
