The founder of IROKO Theatre Company, Alex Oma-Pius, has been awarded the distinguished Services to Arts and Culture accolade at the 2024 BLAC Awards. The event which is held annually, the BLAC Awards celebrate excellence and leadership across the Black, African, and Caribbean communities in the UK, honouring outstanding contributions to culture, community, and business.
Since establishing IROKO Theatre Company in 1996, Alex Oma-Pius has been a pioneering force in using African cultural traditions and storytelling as tools for community engagement and education. Under his leadership, IROKO Theatre has delivered countless workshops, performances, and educational programs that bridge cultural divides and inspire creativity across all ages. The company’s work fosters a greater understanding of African heritage and nurtures cultural pride, making a lasting impact on London’s diverse communities and beyond.
Upon receiving the award, Alex Oma-Pius expressed gratitude, stating, “I’m truly humbled and overwhelmed by this recognition. Art and culture have been at the core of my life’s work, and I’ve always believed in their power to bring people together, inspire change, and preserve our diverse stories.
