Football governing body, Fifa, on Thursday morning published its latest ranking of National Teams. Compared to their position the previous month, the Super Eagles of Nigeria, which used to be a colossus in African and a rookie in world football, climbed two spots, and now occupy the 38th position, while they are fourth in the continental ranking.
However, Nigeria are undefeated since losing 1-0 to Egypt in an African Cup of Nations qualifier on March 29, 2016. Egypt, Senegal, Cameroon and Congo DR are among Africa’s best five teams in the order, with the Indomitable Lions better placed than their next World Cup opponents, the Super Eagles.
Our other two rivals to book a ticket to the 2018 World Cup – Algeria and Zambia – sit in the 53rd and 99th place respectively in the updated ranking. Our main African Nations Cup qualifying foes South Africa and Libya occupy the 65th and 92nd position in the global ranking while the last opponent Seychelles are ranked 194th. Brazil, Argentina and Germany are the top three teams in the world, followed by Chile and Colombia. The next ranking will be published by the official website of Fifa, fifa.com, on 6 July 2017.
