African Voice Newspaper UK, organisers of the annual prestigious African Film Awards (AFA) announce finalists for the 22nd African Film Awards 2018. The judges are now working on selecting the winners for this year’s awards in the various categories from over 200 entries.
The glamourous awards ceremony will celebrate excellence among practitioners in the fast growing African Film and Black British Film & TV Stars on Saturday 3rd November 2018 at the Stratford Town Hall, 29 The Broadway Stratford London E15 4BQ starting with red carpet from 5.00pm.
Some deserving individuals will be honoured with the 2018 African Voice Leadership Awards who have shown dedication to the economic growth of Africa and Special Recognition will also be bestowed on outstanding practitioners from the film industry.
Veteran actress Golda John Abiola, Co- Founder and Event Director of the African Film Awards said, “The impact of the 22years annual celebration is reverberating across Europe and America, it has helped to build the image of the fledging film industry in Africa. Festivals across the world are incomplete without the representation from practitioners from Africa.”
The selection committee of the African Film Awards 2018 confirmed the growing trend of the film industry going by the quality of films and the emergence of new talents. The entries have witnessed new works from many promising practitioners making new directorial debuts.
From the messages impacting short films to well scripted drama and feature films, the AFA selection committee is proud to associate it’s name to the finalists that made the list.
New emerging filmmakers and talents are taking Africa’s film industry unto the next level, the telling of African stories in more creative ways by new directors can only be described as extraordinary.
Global topics ranging from sex slavery, relationships, rape are the engaging themes of some of the outstanding works on the final selection of this year’s awards ceremony. Films such as OMOYE, Bedroom Points and Obsession all from new directors made the great inroad.
London has been hosting the African Film Awards since its inception in 1996, and it has fully established itself as the European hub of English speaking African cinema especially Nollywood. The UK Nollywood is making progress with increasing numbers of collaborative works with the established Nigerian counterparts.
The jury identified some impressive works from UK Nollywood filmmakers which include SistaSista, Alter Date and Miracles of the Christmas Angels with 8, 8, 6, nominations respectively. Some got award nominations for African Actor & Actress of the Year, Award nomination for Best Director, Best Actress in Supporting role, Best actor in Supporting role, Best Producer and Best Feature Film.
