The Peace March for Nigeria #peacemarchfornigeria is a broad-based social-civil event. It is organized by a coalition of Nigerian communities in Belgium under coordination of Hon. Collins Nweke. Consisting of individuals, socio-cultural and religious organizations in collaboration with African and Belgian friends of Nigeria, organizations of African communities in Belgium and their Belgian allies, the March departs from the reasoning that peace for Nigerians is peace for the global community hence the slogan ‘Your Peace our peace’ The world is now connected such that Europeans are no longer able to look at unrest in Nigeria or any other part of the world for that matter as a problem far from their beds.
The Peace March resulted from the various terrorist attacks in Nigeria, which remain quasi unnoticed by the global civil society considering the relative non-action till date. With this Peace March the initiators wish to mobilize as many democratic forces as possible. The aim is to send a strong signal out there that terror anywhere in the world is an attack on our collective humanity and should be condemned and resisted. Among Belgium citizens today are many Nigerians to whom this country is home including third generation of Nigerian roots. There is also a peaceful relationship between the Nigerian and the Belgian population. These are all the more reason to express solidarity from Belgium to the Nigerian people in these difficult moments. We seek the necessary media attention, both nationally and internationally, to establish and drive the peace march.
The Peace March will take place in Ostend, West Flanders, Belgium. The day shall commence at 2 pm when Marchers gather at the main entrance of Council Wing of the City Hall of Ostend, where they will be met and addressed by the Mayor of Ostend, a representative of Prime Minister Charles Michel, a Federal Member of Parliament as well as community and religious leaders. The March will then proceed in a quiet procession to the Nelson Mandela Bridge, a symbolical location in the serene environs of the Maria Hendrika Woods. The story behind this choice of location indicates peace but also resilience and reconciliation as Collins Nweke is expected to capture in his speech. High point of the day is a giant billboard where diverse messages of peace will be penned down by Marchers and handed over to the Ambassador of Nigeria to the European Union, who is expected to give an acceptance message on behalf of the people of Nigeria
