Students, teachers and staff at a secondary school in Asmara have contributed a total of 24,000 Nakfa (£1,400) to four families of fallen heroes in connection with Martyrs Day.
Mr. Gilai Fisehatsion, School director of Halai Secondary School, indicated that the initiative is taken on annual basis through the joint effort of parents, students and the branch office of the Ministry of Labour and Human Welfare. He also expressed conviction that the initiative would be nurtured as a culture among the young generation.
Family beneficiaries of the support said that the gesture attests to the duty of honouring the trust of martyrs on the part of the people, and expressed appreciation to the students of Halai School.
Mr. Mogos Berhane from the Ministry of Labour and Human Welfare expressed appreciation for the initiative taken by the students and staff members of the school, and called on fellow students to emulate their deeds.
Meanwhile, the Ministry indicated that Eritrean community members in Offenbach, Germany have contributed a total of 4,800 Euro, in addition to the patronization of martyrs’ families.
Ever since Eritrea re-claimed its national independence in 1991, June 20 has been declared a national holiday for the sole purpose of respecting and paying tribute to all those who paid the ultimate price, life, in the 30-year war to re-claim national independence and liberation and those who lost their lives in a subsequent ‘heroic war’between 1998 and 2000 to stave off a renewed attempt by Ethiopia to annexe Eritrea under what Eritreans call the ‘pretext of a border dispute’.
