Award-winning arts charity Total Insight Theatre has received funding to produce a breast cancer awareness film for the NHS.
The film is the centrepiece of a larger project that will focus on ethnic minority women in a drive to increase awareness of symptoms and encourage increased breast screening.
A survey by Cancer Research UK found that women from ethnic minority backgrounds were more likely to report they didn’t know any warning signs and symptoms of cancer compared to white women (23% vs 12%).
Total Insight, which has previously produced similar films for the NHS on kidney donation and bowel cancer, will draw on its film-making expertise for this latest project.
The charity has already begun work with a series of workshops, as well as identifying real life stories that can feature in the film.
The breast cancer awareness project will initially aim to reach ethnic minority women in three London boroughs – Hackney, Newham, and Waltham Forest – but will be available to other cancer organisations and groups across the UK.
The film, which looks to dispel myths will be shown to women at a series of special screenings.
Total Insight is expected to have the film completed in October to coincide with National Breast Awareness month.
Adam Tulloch, CEO of Total Insight Theatre, said: “Working on projects like this is at the heart of our mission using the arts to change lives. By combining powerful storytelling with NHS guidance, we aim to break down barriers and spark life-saving conversations about breast cancer that lead to earlier detection and better outcomes.”
