A new play called ‘Kemi from the Block’ will be showcasing at the Stratford Circus Theatre London on March 30th 2020. The play will be of immerse benefit to all and especially the older generation of Africans and Carribeans in understanding youth violence and criminal exploitation in the inner cities.

Set in 2006, ‘Kemi from the Block’ is a play which follows the life of Kemi; a young black girl who lives on a council estate referred to as ‘the block’ in inner city London. She is the first-generation child of a Nigerian immigrant mother and a Jamaican father who has been absent for most of her life. The play follows her transition from a young girl who is focused in school, to being targeted and exploited by the wrong crowd and becoming a notorious drug dealer.

Kemi’s life becomes entangled in violence, drugs, sex and money which drives her deeper into chaotic dilemmas. Her world becomes torn between the people who desperately want to get her back on the right track with the help of the Christian faith and gospel, and the people who want to keep her right where she is, even if it means death.

‘Kemi from the Block’ creatively explores the many underlying factors which contribute to the current problems with youth violence and criminal exploitation of many young girls that is so prevalent in many inner-city communities today.

This play stars: Temi Adigun, Demi Akintewe, Ashara Reid, Karen Minta, Hugo Nkem, Dennis Charley, Elizabeth Alabi and Evalcia Allen

Written and produced by Renike Grace and directed by Emmanuel Lawal
