An Ethiopian love story, set on the streets of Addis Ababa, will be having its UK screening this weekend.
Directed by Joseph Ebongo and Ermias Tadesse (who also stars in the picture) YeFikar Kal (Love’s Promises) follows the relationship of a beautiful and affluent young woman called Sara (Hanan Tarq) who falls in love with Dawit (Miftah Zeleke) her co-worker.
As their relationship progresses, Amen (Tadesse), a man far less privileged than Sara and Abel, is introduced into the narratives, and is pulled into a complicated love triangle.
In the backdrop of what has been described as a moving and passionate film that deals with intriguing themes such as loyalty, friendship and family, is the stunning Ethiopian landscape where the film is set. It depicts buzzing Addis Ababa life, and shows a side to Africa that is often ignored in mainstream media.
The film itself is in Amharic, Ethiopia’s official language, and despite its small budget (just over £16,000), the movie still manages to capture its audience).
“As well as serving lesson to the younger generation about personal obstacles that they may encounter in life the film aims to promote the importance of communication as portrayed in the bond between Sara and her father and raise awareness about the inflictions created by dishonesty and lack of obedience to the law,” co-director Joseph Ebongo told The Voice.
YeFikar Kal will be showing at the London Cinema Museum on Saturday 25th April.
