At least 34 people have been killed and several others injured after a human stampede occurred after a concert in Conakry, Guinea’s capital, on Tuesday evening (July 29th).
The beach concert, which took place to celebrate the end of Ramadan, had performances by popular rap group Guinean rap group Instinct Killers, as well as other artists and was attended by up to 10,000 people according to witnesses.
It was as people moved to make there way out of the beach through the small entrance that several were crushed. It is thought that around 10 young children were killed in the incident and a hospital source told Reuters that most of the victims were under 20.
“There was a stampede to get out of the concert, it was after the show that it all happened. The crowd wanted to get out but there was a rope that blocked the way,” a police source told AFP.”People at the back began pushing and people fell, creating a mass panic.”
Guinea’s president has declared a week of national mourning following the incident and the head of public events has been suspended as investigations into the incident continue.
