Senator representing Ogun Central senatorial district in the National Assembly, Senator Prince Lanre Tejuoso has clamoured for more local contents on pay satellite  television in Nigeria. He made this assertion at tuesday’s Senate plenary in a senate motion on concern on unwholesome practices by Multichoice Nigeria (DSTV). Senator Tejuoso said “The football programme on DSTV is more of international matches showing English Premier League teams like Chelsea and Arsenal. I can’t remember seeing Enyimba,3SC, Sunshine stars, Gateway FC and co the way we see the English Premier League football clubs”.The Senate also frowns at the domination of the Nigerian satellite television market by DSTV thereby enabling it to engage in negative and unhealthy trade practices and unreasonable subscription hikes across their various bouquets which have led to monopoly and growing public complains.

Tejuoso said ” We just have to allow competition so everybody can enjoy pricing policy that is favourable to everybody”. We need to protect the interest and rights of Nigerians”. The Nigerian senate notes that Multichoice Nigeria pay television has been known to dominate the Nigeria satellite market and many subscribers have been complaining about arbitrary increase in the subscription charges, refusal to adopt the pay as you go/use model applicable in other climes where Multichoice operates moving major games from low subscription bouquets to Compact to high subscription bouquets called Premium poor service delivery and absence of toll free lines for customers’ complaints amongst others.

Many concerned Nigerians are aggrieved and in constant demand to stop DSTV’s arbitrary price hikes, noting that recent increase in DSTV subscription is outrageous and totally unacceptable. The Senate noted that the high number of complaints have attracted the attention of Consumer Protection Council (CPC) to look into the issue of consumer abuse as DSTV does not conform with international best practices. The Senate wants the consumers to enjoy or receive the benefit the full purpose of their purchases.
