Nigeria’s bid for a permanent seat in the United Nations is gradually gaining support and receiving backing from the United Kingdom.

Her aspirations for a seat has never been hidden given the roles and influence that the country has been able to play in on the West African terrain, in the AU, and in the world comity. The voice of Nigeria, having permanence is expected to protect the interests of African nations and express the sentiments necessary where hitherto this has been done by the voices of countries with colonial ties and advantage in the United Nations Assembly.

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Andrey Pock, stated that his home government has promised to support Nigeria’s bid for a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council, giving Nigeria consideration over South Africa and Ghana .

Mr.Pock made this revelation when he paid a courtesy visit to the governor of Niger State, Dr Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu in Minna. He noted Nigeria’s role in peace-keeping missions in Africa and around the world, and the stabilising role she is playing in maintaining peace in the west African sub-region.

He added that “Nigeria is important to England, Britain sees Nigeria as a regional and international force. Britain will work with Nigeria on major foreign policy issues.”
