An earthquake, which hit the Orkney area of South Africa, has killed one person and injured several others.

The tremor, which according to the US Geographical Survey had a magnitude of 5.3 cause a wall to collapse into a mine.

There were initially fears that the miners would remain trapped, however Luyanda Majija a spokes woman for the miners stated that ‘they have now been brought out’.

17 employees of Anglogold Ashanti were injured in the quake, and there were also power outages across the nation.

Chris Nthite, Anglogold Ashanti’s spokesman stated “Our priority is the safe passage of our employees from underground. Engineers are inspecting shaft infrastructure, and at those shafts where this work is complete, hoisting of people to surface has already begun.”
